GM after the release of the 1964 Pontiac GTO capped the cubic inches (of engine displacement) at 400 for its V8s on all its intermediate. If you wanted more cubic inches in a GM car you had to either buy a full-size (B-body or C-body) or a Corvette. As the Ford Explorer continued its journey north from Mission Beach on Interstate 5 (the San Diego Freeway) – a route that takes a nice path close to the Pacific Ocean starting around La Jolla.
